Matt Maeson's Birmingham Show Full of Awe, Jokes and Tunes
Back when the temperatures were nearing record highs, I found myself in the chill atmosphere of Iron City in Birmingham for Matt Maeson's Alabama stop on his That's My Cue tour.
Maeson had a decent sized crowd on that July 12th evening, with hundreds of fans wrapped around the building before and after the doors opened. Though it wasn't my first time in Birmingham, it was my first time at Iron City.
There was a bit of breathing room when I initially entered, but by the time the opener Steinza walked on stage, to get any relief, you had to escape to the outskirts of the floor, or make your way to the bar or merch area.
Steinza did a great job of warming up the crowd, though he did have to tell them a handful of times to quiet down a bit as it was an acoustic set.
Oh yeah, Maeson's show was an acoustic one.
It was my first acoustic show as well (this show had a lot of firsts in hindsight) and honestly a treat. I can personally count on my hands how many songs saved in my Spotify library that I can play in polite company, so getting to experience a show where the entire crowd isn't on 10 was quite a treat!
Maeson had the crowd eating out of the palm of his hands as he easily switched from soulful ballad to jokes about his older music, early music career and the people he's met throughout his life.
All in all, a great evening before my trek to Upheaval Festival in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
During the concert, Maeson mentioned that acoustic shows were where he got his start. Here's hoping he never stops!
