Hometown: Mobile, AL

Safety Training might be a new band, but that doesn’t mean they haven’t cut their teeth over the years. The band’s members boast a diverse history playing in the Alabama and Florida Gulf scene, spanning the likes of progressive rock, 2000s emo and alternative, and even metal and hardcore. Safety Training is paving their way in the indie scene with a sound that combines the complex melodies of post-hardcore and indie rock with Rhodes’ trademark vocal style that feels unashamedly from the late 00s. Bound by friendships that date back decades and happenstance introductions through Facebook marketplace interactions, Safety Training is dedicated to putting their sonic stamp on the Gulf Coast scene.

The band’s debut single, “Just Breathing,” puts all this on full display: Mike Martinez’s lead guitar lines create a mood that is at once dark and beautiful, drawing heavily from a post-rock sound; Dustin Harris’ drums parts are tight without ever being overbearing; Ben White’s basslines add some extra punch to balance out the low end. It’s the kind of song that could be pegged for being over a decade old, were it not for the crisp production and captivating mix. “Just Breathing” serves as a great introduction not simply to the band’s sound but to their tenure as songwriters.

The band is currently working on several more singles, all exploring different elements of their sound dynamic.
